Designed by the architect Prof. Klaus Kada and erected in 1988 on the occasion of the Styrian Region’s exhibition “Glass & Coal”, the Stölzle Glas-Center is one of the region’s most impressive buildings. It has been honoured with two architectural awards: Preis des Landes Steiermark für Architektur and Geramb-Rose - Dankzeichen für gutes Bauen. With its facade of 1911 handmade glass tiles, the Glass Museum is a unique building that also houses a well-stocked shop.
Every year the Styrian Glass Art Association in collaboration with Oberglas Bärnbach mounts a special exhibition featuring the art of glass. Each year more than 40,000 visitors immerse themselves in the fascinating world of glass. They are taken through its origins almost 12,000 years ago, and follow the development of glass production throughout the centuries. Finally, the museum bridges the gap between the traditional and today’s state-of-the-art glass production by providing a look at the Oberglas glassblowers’ team at work. This year’s exhibition is dedicated to precious ancient and modern drinking vessels from various European countries and shows as well how glass is being produced these days in the mouthblowing factory Oberglas Bärnbach. The factory shop offers an excellent selection of glass items for sale. There are inexpensive small presents as well as tableware for both daily use and for special occasions. And there are unique, precious pieces made by renowned artists.
