The Fascination of Glass

Glass – a very special material

In the dialect of the west Steiermark, employees who have been with us for a particularly long time are often lovingly referred to as “glass fools”. We believe that glass, more than other materials, is able to captivate the imagination over the long term. Employees who we are honoured to thank for spending 45 years of their working lives with us are an eloquent proof of this.

For thousands of years man has striven to produce glass of outstanding quality and create shapely everyday and artistic objects. The old glassmaker mark and well-known glassworks expression “It requires endless suffering to make good glass” both symbolise the effort behind the manufacture of glass. Even using the most modern manufacturing techniques, one remains sensible to the archaic origins of glass production and a part of the fascination of this material – a product of fire, water, earth and air – may also have something to do with this.

Even when you call us and we are unable to answer immediately or have to re-route your call, you will be received by glass: when waiting on hold you will hear “The Swan” by Camille Saint-Saens, played by the German glass musician Martin Hilmer.

You can find more information about glass music here.
