Fire

The overwhelming impression which a first visit to a glassworks leaves is the high temperatures. This is especially the true on a visit to a traditional hand-blown glassworks where the glassmaker works directly beside the oven.

According to its composition, glass melts at temperatures way over 1,000 degrees Celsius and is handled whilst in a glowing hot and liquid state. In glass manufacturing the moulds, machines, tools and people are all subject to extreme temperature conditions.

Even the “cooling” curve which our glass passes through at the final stage of manufacture is really nothing other than a precisely calculated and controlled process of extremely high temperatures.
